Boston Pilgrim, great hospital

5/5

One of best hospitals been in. Staff all courteous. Clean and tidy. Treated me well

5/5

The car park is very busy today so I have had to park a long way away. which is not so good because I have mobility problems. We get such good treatment. Absolutely would recommend it here. The consultant puts us at ease as soon as we see him. Have had to wait 2hrs, But another time have been in and out quickly. But sometimes the doctors have to carry out appt list for more than their own list. Staff are friendly and cheerful. Haematology Dept

All staff very understanding about patients fear and panic about having cancer. First operation for lumpectomy on 2nd Jan 2015 followed by 2nd op on Jan 22nd - necessary because post op histology showed a 44 cm grade2 (pre op assessment showed 24 cms) I did have to wait a long time for 1st operation on 2nd Jan 2015. I arrived at 7.30 for 8.00 am but was last patient of the day to be operated on.

Ratings for Maternity Unit
All staff are obviously working very hard, but always maintain such a positive attitude, which is a credit to the ward. It would be a DISGRACE if the Maternity unit was shut down. My wife would not have made it to Lincoln, so either the baby would have been born in the car on side of A15, or an Ambulance would have been used.

Attended endoscopy unit today - as with all other previous experiences (in other departments) at Boston Pilgrim I can't fault the staff who are all experienced, friendly, extremely helpful, caring and great at putting you at your ease.Waiting times are minimal and they're always trying to improve by using one stop clinics wherever possible.

Ratings for Childrens ward
The staff on the Childrens Ward were so welcoming and friendly, - unfortunately nurse who performs blood tests was not there, so had to wait for a doctor instead. Otherwise very satisfied with the quality of care we received today.

5/5

I found the staff at the Breast Clinic of Pilgrim Hospital, Boston very competent. I was put at ease and given contact details so that I can book my own mammogram should I wish.

As a previous in-patient of Pilgrim Hospital and carer of someone who has also been an inpatient, I cannot fault the kindness and compassion of staff and of treatment received – full marks!

Staff friendly and efficient. I come every 6 months for injections and except for on one occasion in Jan2016 where an appointment was given for the wrong clinic, so my time and the doctors time was wasted. 5/5

Royle Eye Clinic
Usual high standard of care in this department.
Parking ticket machine in disabled car park was not working and disabled people were having to stagger over to the other disabled parking - quite fare away to get a ticket. When not well, one does not want this kind of tiring, frustrating exercise. Maybe some kine of arrangement to pay at reception might be implemented for such times or better still, discontinue these charges altogether.

5/5

No problems with this hospital at all - waiting times very poor. Needs a better staff to patient ratio

5/5

Breast care
Nurse is compassionate, thoughtfully and clearly experienced lady. To talk through my concerns has been so helpful. This service is so vital for breast cancer patients. The one frustration is that my notes were not up to date. Recent letters were not present, last update was 2014.

5/5

The whole team work well together. were efficient and kind, explain the proceedure. the waiting room I didn't like not sure why.
The chemo suite at Pilgrim is very well run , sister Mandy Dawson and her team are very good. the room itself is not big enough when having treatment you are far too overcrowded and near other people who are being sick. The Mcmillian nurse Lisa dichmond has been a fantastic support over the past year Kind, Practical and efficient. Laso Dr Perry and Dr Barroney have delt with me in a caring and professional manor. Haematology - Marvelous
Waiting times can be long, but I understand because the doctors will sometimes take time to carry out urgent procedures for patients. Before I came here I go to louth hospital drop in for blood tests and they get the results here by appointment time. Would like to crongratulate reception staff in outpatients they are so helpful. Sometimes I need to go to one of the wards at pilgrim. I am frightened of lifts and can't use the stairs, so the staff come down and collect me and help me with the lift.

Comments for Falls Clinic
Appt time was 1.45 pm, seen by consultant at 2.25 pm. Dr on ward dealing with poorly patient which lead to 40 minute delay. Was kept informed by nurse about waiting time. Appt was first on Clinic list. Mum was asked by all staff if she would prefer to be called by her first name or by her full name. Consultant was very thorough, checking Mum's notes and even complimenting Mum's G.P. on a thorough Referral letter. Spoke to Mum directly throughout the consultation and in a language that she could understand. Mum was included in the process all the way.
Consultant was thoroughly involved with Mum throughout the consultation - approx 1 hour. Referred to Mums notes all the time, checked all medications, referred to all scans and other medical information. Included contacting GP notes, prescriptions checking handbook on medication. Referred for further tests and investigations. Explained fully that it was a step by step process with the need to eliminate and review small changes.

Pt was made aware of length of appt this was given to the patient. All questions answered, follow up info given and reasurances when required. Relative/chaperone was only involved when required.
Patient had an app first in Oct to come back in 12 weeks unless ther was need to contact the hospital. Pt had experienced another fall over xmas and 10 Feb 2016 was the first appt that was available. Would like to add- on another visit for blood test- please can they go back to old tourniquet- new ones are extremely uncomfortable and do not do the job.

Have had to chase up appointments and paperwork on more than one occasion- eg in Dec was told to start taking medication as soon as possible by consultant- paperwork did not reach my GP until Jan 4th so could not get medication until then.

Ratings for A&E Writing this on behalf of my father in law. His medication was lost between A&E and AMU. This delayed his discharge as new blister packs had to be made before he could be discharged. When explaining new medication, nurse said take one tablet per day. On reading instructions should have been three times per day.

Midwife did not want to carry out examination as I had only just arrived - I explained my first birth was very quick. She disagreed and 20 minutes later my baby was born. I felt I should have been listened to a little bit more.

Patient with complex medical conditions waiting for appointment at hospital. Currently uses wheelchair but would like to be able to walk better. Armed Services veteran and experiences mental health issues. Found that professionals generally do not understand issues faced by military personnel and problems they face.
Now referred to physiotherapy and received 2 sessions which is making him feel better physically and emotionally so positive outcome and pain has been reduced greatly giving him focus and a way forward.

Not very clean. \\\'Go somewhere else if able to choose\\\'. Wrong diagnosis seven years ago when CVA not recognized.

My 4 yr old granddaughter recently attended ENT for a hearing test. She had to wear large headphones which she was unfamiliar with. It would be better if something more up to date and more suitable for children were available to make a potentially scary environment into something more friendly

Lots of notices on wall telling patients 'you are important to us' but in practice, many of the hospital staff do not introduce themselves to patients.
Too many staff are discussing 'personal stuff' in ear shot of patients.
Overheard a conversation between staff 'running down' one of the consultants (who I was actually going to see)

When in with consultant, not able to sit on a chair without arms. Not available in the consulting room. Offered a 'swivel' chair which is not suitable for a patient with Parkinsons to sit on.
Felt that the doctor had not read notes as they asked 'why I was there?' surly they should know that from my notes.
Lots of different chairs in waiting area, but not in the consulting rooms.

Ward 5
Agency staff - nurse gave very poor quality of care.
Consultant discussed operation thoroughly.
One surgery appointment was cancelled a few times, my condition deteriorate and on consultant wanted to discharge me. Insisted on seeing particular consultant which was one reason operation was delayed. If I could have had surgery earlier it would have made a huge difference to my life.

Arrived at A&E Pilgrim within 40 minutes from my phone call. Husband was taken straight through. Seen very promptly and on ward where he stayed overnight. He was discharged 24 hours later. All staff looked after him really well and made sure that I was kept updated and informed all along the way. A big thank you to all, with all the care he was given, I still have him and we have just celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary together. Thank you to all staff concerned.

I was recently in on Ward 5a and found the Day Staff polite and caring, although very busy. Nurses were friendly and efficient, who had a great work ethic and an understanding of what it is like to be a patient. The facilities, toilets, washing, equipment and bed, were of poor quality and in much need of updating and renovation.

These comments were on a feedback form re patients visits to Moulton Surgery but relate to Pilgrim Hosp.
I took a lady to Boston Hospital and she was kept too long. She was to have an eye op and by the time she was to be operated on nearly five hours later her blood pressure was sky high and she was shaking. She was told she couldn\'t have the operation as she wasn\'t fit.

Vascular nurses and doctors very good. Had several scans and bloods done in 1 day and all relatively little waiting.

My quality of care was ok, waiting time from A&E to going to ward very poor, very busy. Can't blame staff, it's the system so over stretched.

Doctor said 93-year-old mother was fit to go home after a bad fall. She lives alone. I refused to take her home and another doctor and a nurse agreed with me and told me to stand my ground. She ended up staying in hospital for more than 2 weeks with heart problems. If she had gone home she would probably have died. Doctor needs lessons in elderly patient care.

Waiting room packed + standing room only. Lenghty wait.

Would not choose Boston if given the choice. Town always bad for traffic and not my nearest hospital. Waiting time is lengthy.
First appointment was Johnson at Spalding. First calss.

Dec 7th cancelled
Dec 20th cancelled
No explanation why

Not happy with appointments, told an hour delay on getting here then because the delay EXTRA CAR PARKING COST. Then only in 10 minutes with doctor.

What is the point in having appointments, I am a regular visitor to hospital (usually dermatology) always have appointment and always delayed appointment. Always extra parking cost. We seem to wait 3 times longer to see a doctor than the time the doctor spends seeing us.
Most waiting rooms full of patients I travel from Skegness approx 40 mins then delayed appointment then travel back home 1/2 a day gone.

Vascular Surgery/Urology
Attending Boston Hospital is a miserable experience, right from the car parking onwards. The cost of which is hugely increased by the appalling wait and delays. Is keeping the patient waiting a fund raising policy?
Why give a time for an appointment when there is no chance that it is ever kept? Hours of hanging around in a germ filled environment is very bad for sick people.
Are doctors above ordinary people? Does not good time keeping help everyone? I suggest all appointments cease to have a time given, just tell the patient to set aside the whole day and have done with it.

Maternity Ward
I was left to starve with no refills of water for 48 hours. Being 38 weeks pregnant, it made me delusional. When my son was born they admitted I was right that my son was over 40 weeks when born. Also admitted that my waters had been breaking at 30 weeks when I complained I was leaking. Causing him to be blue lighted to Nottingham.

Mother diagnosed with terminal illness which is not treatable. Care delayed and planning for discharge delayed due to being wrongly informed. Informed by rude and disrespectful staff that mother who lacks capacity was required to inform of diagnosis prior to any planning for care. However informed this was wrong by palliative care team.
Not kept informed about medical care at all, in fact treated like we were a burden by same staff members.
