Hospital wards in Louth renamed to honour dedicated volunteer

Betty Archer, 83, a retired nurse, volunteers her time to escort patients to their appointments at County Hospital Louth. She travels with them, helps them understand what has been discussed and assists in overcoming any problems they may encounter. 

To honour Betty’s dedication to patients on Manby Frailty Assessment Centre and Carlton Ward, Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS) has re-named the areas to Archer Ward and Archer Assessment Unit. 

The two inpatient wards have now changed focus to become a frailty assessment centre and an inpatient ward.

Angela Wilson, the Matron for Community Hospitals at LCHS said:

“Betty excels in her voluntary duties and is always cheerful and professional. It is reassuring for staff when Betty escorts patients, as we know they in great hands. 

“It is a fitting tribute to have these wards named after her.”

Betty, from Louth, added: “I love volunteering and this role is perfect as I like to help people and make them feel at ease, plus I have a lot of knowledge of the NHS in Lincolnshire, having worked as a night sister across County Hospital, Louth for over 30 years.

“I am overwhelmed and extremely honoured to have two areas named after me.”

The new names were unveiled in a small ceremony on Friday, 16 August.
